The Book Of The Dead

  • Spain, Barcelona. Exuberant sculpture on graves at Cementiri del Sud-oest.
  • France, Cevennes. Solitary grave on the edge of the deserted village of Cabrillac, near Mont Aigoual.
  • Paris, France. For well-to-do French this has long been their favourite way of burial. Pere Lachaise is full with chambers like this.

  • Denmark, Kopenhagen - The granite grave of physicist Niels Bohr on Assistens Kirkegard is decorated with a sculpture of an owl, the symbol of his wisdom.

  • Haiti, Port-au-Prince, Cimetiere Central - On November 1 and 2 many Haitians commemorate the dead. They celebrate an exuberant party at a cemetery, combining voodoo with christian elements around the crosses of the voodoo spirits Baron Samedi and Erzulie Freda.

This is also one of the places where the Duvallier dictators buried their victims. Sometimes animals dig up a human bone or skull.

  • Their father Le Huu Dong (57) says: "Nhon (right, 27) and Hoa (14) have the same problem. People call them monsters, but their brains are normal. They can understand, speak and walk." As a soldier in the South-Vietnamese army, Dong was in contact with Agent Orange. A third child with the same syndrome died.
  • Tran Dinh Ca (boy, centre) is 6 years old. His mother: "Ca can't understand, speak, hear nor walk or stand. He can't eat by himself. He just lies in bed all the time. Ca has no feeling of pain, or cold and heat. He just shales his head and grinds his teeth all the time. He doesn't react to noise, and his hands and legs are always in slight convulsions."
  • The parents of these children of 12, 15, 17 and 22 years are farmers who live in Can Tuyen commune (Cam Lo). The mother (50): "All of my children are foolish. They can't speak and can't walk, only Lam (left) a little bit. They can understand what people say, crawl and they can see, but not clearly. They can eat by themselves."
  • Dao Duy Thanh is 12 years old. His Mother, Le Thi Sinh (39): "Thanh can't speak and walk, only sit and lie down. He can't eat by himself, can't understand people and has difficulty in breathing. He can hear and see a little." His father was in the North Vietnamese army for 5 years. He died of blood cancer in 1998.
  • Ho Viet Dung (7 months), sits with his mother, Nguyen Thi Hang (22. The father, Ho Viet Hung (24): "Until now Dung 's has a normal health. Unfortunately he has a hare lip." Both his and his wife's fathers were North Vietnamese soldiers. Both parents are stone cutters, living in Cam Chinh commune (Cam Lo).
  • Nguyen Duy Khan is a possible victim. His mother Phan Thi Nghia (43): "Khanh can hear and stand up and walk a little, but only with support. He can understand a little bit, but he can't speak except for the word mother. He doesn't feel pain, cold or heat. He is now 20 years old, but looks like a child of 6."
  • Tran Thi Thao (7), here with her grandmother Hoang Thi Dieu (84) and her (single) mother Tran Thi Cuc (42, farmer). Mother: "Thao only lies in bed. She can see and hear but not hold anything in her hand. She can speak a little, but with great difficulty." They live in Cam Lo town.
  • Nguyen Duc Vinh with his sister, parents and grandmother. Father Le Vinh Hien is vice-chairman of the Committee for Children's Protection and Aid in Cam Lo town: "Vinh has a terrible skin problem. He can speak and understand, but he can't walk." The mother's father was in the South-Vietnamese army.
  • Nguyen Van Lanh (17, right) and his brother Nguyen Van Truong (11) are from Cam Nghia commune in Cam Lo. Mother Le Thi Mit earlier had 2 spontaneous abortions. One other child died, having suffered the same problems as these two. The parents are both farmers.
  • Ho Van Thach (10) with his sister Ho Thi Thiet (6), mother Dang Thi Kim Yen (34) and father Ho Van Thanh (36). Both grandfathers were soldiers in the South Vietnamese army. In the early eighties Thanh worked in a forest "where all the trees were burned: no leaves, only branches". They live in Cam Lo town.
  • Le Thi Duong is 12. Her father, Le Van Trang (shopkeeper, 42): "Duong can recognize absolutely nothing. She can only lie in bed. All her activities are in bed. She can't speak, but she can cry." They live in Cam Chinh commune (Cam Lo).
  • Nguyen Thi Quynh Phuong (5), with her sister Nguyen Thi Duong (6) and mother Hoang Thi Suong (27). Mother: "When the wheather changes, Phuong has epilepsy, especially in summer. She has no sense of taste, can't understand or speak. The parents are farmers and live in Cam Lo town.

  • Parliament has already agreed with a new highway on the most attractive bank of the river Meuse in the southern province of Limburg. A tunnel will be build to save the pretty valley of the Swalm.
  • The old town of Leiden would like to build houses on the Naval Airbase of Valkenburg near The Hague. Except for a few Orions, the base is used by the Dutch royal family and government ministers. That makes Leiden's plans rather improbable.
  • The new highway A50 in the southern province of Brabant hits nearly every bit of nature it finds on its track. On this place it will cross the small river Aa.

    ManMade Nature - Photos of how the Dutch create their own country

  • The Netherlands - Fish swim in river water that flows through a laboratory on a boat on the river Rhine. If the water turns poisonous, the fish will die, so alerting the authorities.
  • The Netherlands - Between The Hague and Rotterdam, Highway 44 suddenly ends in the middle of a polder. Environmentalists are trying to save the landscape and the ministry of transport is trying to finish the highway.
  • The Netherlands - A new park in the centre of Utrecht hides one of the most polluted places in The Netherlands. In a 200 million euro operation, the pollution was isolated and the park laid out above it.

    Paradise Lost In Montserrat. The Story of the Montserrat Volcano.

  • Montserrat - William Beer (50) lives in the part of Montserrat that was evacuated because of the volcano. He's one of the few who insisted on staying behind with the stray dogs and the cattle.
  • Montserrat - Plymouth, capital of Montserrat, is covered meters-deep in mud from the volcano. Under the almond tree next to the war memorial many Montserratians exchanged their first kisses.
  • Montserrat - Steam, hot gas, smoke and ash roll down Soufriere Hills. It chased most inhabitants from their homes and destroyed the capital, Plymouth, and the most attractive part of the island.
  • Montserrat - Abandoned villa in the evacuated Danger Zone near the Soufriere Hills volcano. These pictures of Montserrat were taken at the end of 1997.
  • Montserrat - The volcano covered the heart of this plant with ash. The island's vegetation suffers a lot: it gets burned by eruptions or pyroclastic flow or is suffocated by falling ash.
  • Montserrat - Pyroclastic flows can reach as far as lovely Isles Bay down a river valley. Dozens of expatriates' villas are now abandoned and the palm trees have been killed off by the blanket of volcanic ash.
  • Montserrat - Hellina Halloran used to live near the volcano and is now staying in a refugee shelter in a church. Mrs. Halloran's husband has left for the UK and she and her son hope to follow him as soon as they can.
